In one week, it is possible to have a suggestive insight into the variety of landscapes of these two wild regions of Abruzzo and Molise. Situated in the centre of Italy and bathed by the Adriatic Sea, they offer the traveller a few beautiful moments of authenticity in their typical villages, beautiful steps in the heart of their natural parks and pleasant days of relax on the beach.
Day 1: Tirino Valley - L 'Aquila
Day 2: Gran Sasso National Park
Day 3: Directorate Vasto
Day 4: Vasto - Termoli
Day 5: National Park of Majella
Day 6: Sulmona, Pacentro and Scanno
Day 7: Abruzzo National Park or Isernia Province in Molise
Discover the stone villages of the Tirino Valley in the heart of the Gran Sasso National Park (Capestrano, San Stefano di Sessanio, Castel del Monte). Climb to the fortress of Rocca Calascio to enjoy the spectacular panorama. In the afternoon, go to L'Aquila to enjoy the end of the day animation in its still battered streets. Visit the San Bernardino Basilica, reopened in 2015, and make a detour by Santa Maria di Collemaggio and by the fountain at 99 Bouches.
From Fonte Cerreto, next to Assergi, borrow the funicular to reach Campo Imperatore. From Passo delle Capannelle, follow one of the many hiking trails (itineraries are available on the park website).
Two routes of choice (which can be combined if sufficient time is available): by the coast, reach the small centre of Ortona, then go along the Costa dei Trabocchi to Vasto; by the hinterland, visit Chieti and greet the Warrior of Capestrano at the Archaeological Museum, then cross the landscape of bucolic hills and stop in a field for a wine tasting.
Visit of two historic centres overlooking the sea. In the afternoon, visit the natural Reserve of Punta Aderci and enjoy its unspoilt beaches of great tourism.
Follow trails to discover waterfalls, vast mountain landscapes, hermitages hanging on rock; visit the cave of Cavallone.
Discover the charming city of Sulmona, its Piazza Garibaldi, bordered by the medieval aqueduct, and its Palazzo dell'Annunziata blend with elegant Gothic and Renaissance styles. Take a little step in Pacentro and walk through its alleys to the imposing castle. Follow the Sagittario valley to Scanno and its medieval centre.
Hiking lovers will take the direction of the National Park of Abruzzo. The others will go to Isernia, its small historic centre and its Fontana della Fraterna, which will combine the visit with the choice: a stop at Pietrabbondante and its archaeological site and then in Agnone; the visit of Venafro, its castle and its Roman remains; the Archéologique archaeological site, wrongly unknown.
