Located 15 km off Kourou, Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph and Île du Diable, forming the archipelago of the Salvation Islands, were one of the highlights of the penal colony. On Île Royale, there are still many buildings built by the Prison Service that bear witness to this prison world closed in 1946. The hospital is an excellent example of late 19th century architecture; the death row, the parish churchéglise, the parish church, the madhouse, the lighthouse, etc. Some of the buildings, in particular the dwellings for the guards, have been restored to their original state and serve as rooms for those considering a stay on the island. The former guards' mess houses the kitchens and restaurant where you can have lunch with a beautiful view of Devil's Island.
