Those who have more than a week to spare can immerse themselves in the campo (inland) to the north of the country where the expanses are larger and the parilladas ever more copious; enjoy the pristine beaches and natural lagoons of the fashionable but less trendy and flashy department of Rocha than the very posh Punta del Este. Lovers of hunting or fishing will spend a wonderful time in an estancia, especially in the region of the Negro River, a river that is home to a very rich ecosystem. On the Uruguay River, you can enjoy towns with preserved charm such as Fray Bentos, Paysandu or Salto, not to mention relaxing in the region's thermal waters. From there, it is possible to reach the famous Iguazú Falls (Brazil). The most convenient way is to rent a vehicle, with affordable prices and greater freedom of travel; buses connect the main Uruguayan cities, but you are dependent on schedules. And be aware that in the interior of the country, in particular, there is sometimes only one bus that leaves in the morning and one in the evening. This typical itinerary, which is not exhaustive, is done by car - but we repeat, it is possible to follow the coast of the Uruguay River and the Atlantic coast by bus.

Day 17: Back
Arrival in Montevideo - or Colonia del Sacramento. Departure to Colonia (visit the capital later). Visit of the city and its historic district. Night on site.
Departure for Carmelo, Nueva Palmira, Mercedes (coast). Night in a estancia in the vicinity of Mercedes or in this city.
Discover the surroundings of the river and Fray Bentos, then direction Paysandu. Overnight in a nearby estancia.
Join Salto (in the north) where you will benefit from the thermal baths. Night in a estancia or city, depending on your desire and budget.
From Salto to Tacuarembo (northwest), in the footsteps of the very famous tango singer, Carlos Gardel. Overnight on site.
Direction south to reach Paso de los Toros (Highway 5); Stop in San Gregorio de Polanco and night in this pleasant seaside resort.
The next day The road to stop at Paso de los Toros, in a estancia. In the programme: horseback riding, fishing, good meals and rest!
Florida is joined by Durazno, Florida. Those who are taken by time will be able to gain Montevideo late in the day. Night in Florida or Montevideo.
In Montevideo, visit the historic districts of Palermo and Barrio Sur, walk along the rambla, by the beach and discover Pocitos. Night on the spot; it is the opportunity to spend an evening in a tanguería or in the theatre (Solís for example).
Half day in Montevideo - cultural visits, shopping... - then direction Punta del Este in the afternoon to arrive at the end of the day (1 hour and a half drive). We recommend that you find accommodation in La Barra, for example, while families and the elderly will prefer Piriápolis, a seaside resort with a more subtle charm.
In the department of Rocha - stopover at La Paloma or La Pedrera to enjoy the beach, sun and sea. Relax and possibly strolling into the lagoons late in the day. Night on site.
Day in Cabo Polonio (get there as soon as possible to take advantage of the day), a biosphere reserve where the whole year is an important colony of wolffish. Ride in a truck at the entrance to the park to browse the 7 km that separates you from the cape. Then we take advantage of this end of land where time seems to have stopped. If you can spend one night on the spot, don't get rid of it: Quiet, starry sky (for no light pollution), noise of the sea... If you need to take the road, take direction Punta del Diablo (to the east).
Another day in Cabo Polonio then direction Punta del Diablo in the afternoon and night there. Or whole day in Punta del Diablo if you arrived the day before. Other seaside resort popular in summer but more quiet than Punta del Este (and more authentic): beach and friendly restaurants.
Around Punta del Diablo, visit the fort of Santa Teresa (declared a national park), its fishing village and relax on the beach. Overnight in the village.
From there we reach Chuy, on the Brazilian border; visit the San Miguel fort. In Chuy, it's a great opportunity to shop: the prices are unbeatable! It is better to come back to Punta del Diablo to spend the night, the place is more pleasant.
The time of return rang. Take the road that passes through Minas (history of change), and we will stop there. Arrival early in the evening in Montevideo.
Free morning in Montevideo before taking a flight or boat for Buenos Aires. Think of booking your boat ticket in advance, especially in the high tourist season!
