Rafting on the Rio Pacuare

Early in the morning, departure from San Jose in grouped service towards Siquirres for a rafting descent on the Rio Pacuare to the Rios Tropicales lodge, in the heart of the jungle.

Upon arrival at the operations center in Siquirres, you will stop to enjoy a typical breakfast (included), then the guides will give you safety instructions and navigation techniques.

Ready for adventure, you'll board the rafts and begin to navigate between canyons and lush vegetation through an impenetrable and wild jungle. Class III rapids welcome you into the charm of the Rio Pacuare gorges, in the heart of the primary rainforest, and some of the scenery is breathtaking!

Before taking a picnic on the banks of the river, you will enjoy a walk in the jungle leading to a waterfall and a natural swimming pool.

In the early afternoon, you will arrive at the lodge nestled in the jungle, where you can relax, swim in the waterfall or explore the self-guided trails of the 600-hectare private reserve.

Approximate driving time: 3 hours from San José to Siquirres.

Approximate rafting time: 2h30; class II & III rapids from easy to moderate.

Free day at leisure to explore the beautiful surroundings of the lodge as you wish.

The site is the ideal starting point for guided hikes (included) in the heart of nature to discover the local flora and fauna. Various trails lead to a thousand and one waterfalls that flow into the rainforest, and you will have the privilege of spotting tropical birds and constantly confronting the wildlife of this protected environment.

If you wish, you can also book on site various outdoor activities offered by the lodge (not included):

- horseback riding

- hike to the Cabecar indigenous community

Rafting on the Rio Pacuare

After being awakened by the sounds of the rainforest and the roaring rapids of the Rio Pacuare, you will enjoy a delicious breakfast.

Free time to enjoy the surrounding nature and departure for a new day of adventure in the white waters.

Along the way, you will stop to visit crystalline waterfalls and natural waterfalls.

In the early afternoon, you will reach the road and the Rios Tropicales operations center in Siquirres, where you will be able to change clothes and have a hot lunch (included).

Approximate rafting duration: 3 hours; class III & IV rapids from moderate to difficult. Arrival around 13:30 in Siquirres.

Road from San Jose to Sarapiqui.

Departure to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, whose forests are the refuge of tapirs, sloths, coatis and various monkeys.

Day 5 : Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui

Half day volunteering in Sarapiqui


During this day, in total immersion in the community of Sarapiqui, you will be able, while sharing with its members, to repaint the school, do some planting, build a vegetable garden, sensitize the students to recycling, express your artistic talents, reforest the local farms... among others!

Approximate duration: 4 hours.

 

To the rhythm of Latin music

Discover a fundamental element of Latin culture: dance!
Salsa, Merengue and Cumbia Criolla, these names and rhythms will have (almost) no more secrets for you. Let the music rise inside you and free your hips, following the advice of your teacher.

Day 6 : Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui - Arenal Volcano

Road from Sarapiqui to Arenal.

The road continues towards the La Fortuna region and the majestic Arenal volcano (1,650 metres), which is perfectly conical in shape.

Approximate driving time: 1 hour 30 minutes.

 

Stroll over the suspension bridges

You will enjoy a 3 km long route crossing the primary forest and about 15 suspension bridges over the canopy, from where you will have a breathtaking view of the tropical vegetation and the Arenal Volcano!

Approximate duration: 2 hours of walk.

Cocoa tour: learn, salivate, enjoy!

Discover the secrets and wonders of one of man's favourite foods: chocolate. You will learn everything about chocolate, from the planting of the cocoa fruit, its transformation process and history, to the manufacture of the bars! You will be able to taste the indigenous chocolate drink, as well as the chocolate bars made from organic cocoa. At the end of the tour, you will have the opportunity to make your own bar that you can take with you.

Tenorio National Park

You will explore one of the most beautiful trails in the country between jungle, waterfalls and natural hot springs. You will have the opportunity to discover the Rio Celeste famous for its unreal turquoise blue colour (which intensifies with the reflection of the light rays) due to the minerals in its waters which contrast with the intense green of the tropical vegetation.

36 km long, the Rio Celeste originates at the meeting point of 2 rivers, crosses volcanic hot springs, sulphur springs, before forming a magnificent waterfall.

Approximate duration: 2 hours 30.

Day 11 : Tenorio Volcano - Samara

In the morning, departure for the Nicoya peninsula.

You will cross the Puente de la Amistad before reaching Nicoya, the administrative centre of the peninsula which lives at the rhythm of the comings and goings of campesinos (peasants) and cowboys. You will cross varied landscapes before reaching the small seaside resort of Samara.

Then, installation at the hotel near a beautiful white sand beach, ideal site for idleness or swimming in the turquoise waters of the Pacific.

Day 13 : Samara

Saddle up!

Set off on a horseback ride between farms and the coast, in the shade of the tall Guanacaste trees that have given their name to the province. The HorseJungle ranch is run by a French couple and their horse-loving volunteers.

You will go to the wild grey sand beach of Buenavista located 3 kms north of Samara. You will cross many rivers and shady jungle paths before returning to the starting farm.

Then you will reach Barigona Beach. Like in a dream: white sand beach bordered by coconut palms, turquoise and clear water. The views are unforgettable.

On the way back you will pass through the village of Buenavista, local atmosphere...

Approximate duration: 3 hours.

Day 14 : Samara - Costa de Pajaros

Today, you leave the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula to reach Costa de Pajaros, an area famous for bird watching.

Approximate driving time: 2 hours and a half.

Discovery of the mangrove by boat

Early in the morning you will leave by boat to explore the mangroves of the Abangares River. You will discover the rich fauna of this typical ecosystem of the Nicoya golf course. You will be able to observe the impressive diversity of birds and, with a bit of luck, crocodiles, crabs and iguanas.

Approximate duration: 2 hours and a half.

 

Route from Costa de Pajaros to Uvita.

Today, departure for the South Costa Rican Pacific coast to reach the region of Uvita and its many beaches.

Approximate driving time: 3 hours and a half.

Day 16 : Marino Ballena Park - Uvita

Marino Ballena National Park

Created to protect the country's largest coral reef, the national park owes its name to the humpback whales that roam its warm waters to reproduce.

You will be surprised by the natural shape of the beach in this park, which is exactly shaped like a whale's tail!

Discovery of the Nauyaca Falls

Departure for a walk to the Cataratas de Nauyaca, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the country. You will continue the walk through lush vegetation to a canyon about 80 meters wide.

Arrival at the waterfalls, some of which reach 45 meters high. You will then be able to take full advantage of the natural swimming pools to swim and relax while enjoying the surrounding nature.

 

Approximate duration: 4 to 5 hours of walking; intermediate to difficult level.

Note: falls closed on Sundays, entrance fee to be paid on site.
