Night in Shanghai
A day of sightseeing without driver or guide, we invite you to discover :
SHANGHAI is one of the world's largest cities, with 15 million inhabitants, and China's biggest port. And yet, its rise was late in China's history. Originally, it was a small fishing village known for its weaving workshops. In the mid-19th century, following the defeat of the Chinese Empire in the conflict with Westerners who wished to set up trading posts with China, Shanghai became a flourishing commercial port, thanks to its position at the mouth of the Yangtze River.
In the 1930s, the city known as "The Pearl of the Orient" was a hub of world trade. Mothballed in Communist China, the city has benefited from the recent policy of economic openness to resume its activities at a breathtaking pace: in just six years, the fields of the Pudong district have seen the rise of a business district of 3,500 towers, including one of the world's tallest.
Day devoted to a tour of the city:
-- A walk through the former French Concession: The New Heaven and Earth (Xin Tian Di)
-- Jade Buddha Temple
-- A stroll along the Bund
-- A stroll and shopping in Nanking Street
