Trip description

A stay of one month is the ideal time to have a general "overview" of the country. The density of sites would require a very sustained pace to move closer to a hypothetical comprehensiveness, in the name of which one would deprive the people of the country of their daily lives.

Arrival in Guatemala City and then direction Antigua.




Day 2 : Antigua, a jewel of colonial architecture

Antigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the streets, stroll on the Central Parque and in the handicraft market where you discover the thousand colours of traditional clothing. Visit of churches and monasteries in colonial times. One morning, climb at the lookout of Cerro la Cruz to enjoy a panoramic view of the city surmounted by its majestic volcanoes.




Day 3 : A little sport

Day 4 : Around Lake Atitlán

Direction Atitlán Lake, with a first stop in Panajachel. Visit of the city and especially souvenir shopping on the main street. One of the most authentic of the country is the Sololà market. Night at Pana.




Day 5 : Indigenous villages bordering the lake

Visit of villages bordering the lake. You can massage in San Marcos, relax in San Pedro, dive in the waters of the old crater in Santa Cruz, admire the beautiful turquoise clothes of the women of Santa Catarina Palopó, visit the painting workshops or start fishing in San Juan. Overnight, in one of the villages.

Day 7 : The Chichicastenango market

Early departure for Panajachel, and then take a bus for Chichicastenango. Visit its famous market (most frequented by Guatemala) in the smoke of incense that permanently burns, attend the religious ceremony at the Santo Tomás Church on Sunday morning, tinged with traditional Mayan rites.




Day 8 : Visit of Xela

Departure for Xela (Quetzaltenango) and its region. Xela is the second largest city after the capital. We start with a guided tour of the city.




Day 9 : Relaxation in thermal waters

After the market in Zunil, you can relax in the springs of warm and hot waters of Las Fuentes Georginas, go to the San Francisco el Alto market, make a hook by the village of San Andres Xecul and visit its famous church full of colours.




Day 10 : From the top of the volcano

For nature lovers, take the ascent of the Santa María volcano (maybe a full moon night) and discover with a Mayan priest Laguna Chicabal.




Day 11 : Immersion in the heart of charming villages



On the last day, if it is a Sunday, go to the market of the traditional village of Todos Santos, in the department of Huehuetenango. Alternatively, the alternative may be to make a trek in the Cuchumatanes, from Todos Santos or Nebaj with indigenous guides of the "Ixil Triangle".




Day 12 : Cobán and its environs



We arrive in Cobán and its region after taking the road passing through Uspantán. Visit of Orchideario (greenhouse with orchids) and walk in the city around the Central Parque. Take a tour also at Calvario church.




Day 13 : Grottes Caves

Cap on the caves of Lanquín and the beautiful natural water site of Semuc Champey. Swimming. Night on site, the route from Cobán is quite difficult.

Day 15 : Travel to the north

Visit of the city of Flores, you can also take a tour at the Santa Elena market.




Day 17 : The famous Mayan ruins of Tikal

Visit of the archaeological site of Tikal and its legendary pyramids in the heart of the jungle. Night in El Renate on the shores of Lake Centra Itzá.




Day 18 : Ruins of Yaxhà

Walk in the biotope of Cerro Cahui and visit the site of Yaxhà.




Day 19 : On the banks of the Río Dulce

Arrival in Río Dulce. Visit of the beautiful cascade mixing hot water and cold torrent of La Finca Paraíso to half an hour from the village or visit the waterfalls of Las Conchas.




Day 20 : Cruise on the Río Dulce



Small cruise on the Río Dulce, and night in a jungle lodge. Guaranteed change!

Day 22 : Géantes giant Stelas

Boat for Puerto Barrios. From here, we go to the site of Quiriguá admiring the giant stelas in this place which was one day the center of the Mayan civilization.

Day 24 : Break in Honduras



A short break in Honduras, a few kilometres from the border to visit the royal city of the Maya in Copán.
