The Essential Steps of a Journey

The first image that comes to mind when speaking of a trip to China is its great and majestic crenelated wall that undulates over 6,700 km. It is a strong symbol of Chinese civilization and a must-see for any trip to China. Located near Tian'anmen Square in Beijing, the Forbidden City is another emblematic site of Chinese culture, concentrating many imperial treasures of this mythical civilization. During the visit, it is impressive to see that everything seems preserved in the same state as before, keeping a trace of traditional China. Protected by moats, the Forbidden City is today a true museum, the Palace Museum. In Leshan, in the Sichuan province, there is a huge Buddha listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its 71 meters in height and 28 meters in width, this representation is one of the largest in the world, highly valued in Buddhism. In Shaanxi, near Xi'an, lies the tomb of Emperor Qin (3rd century BC), considered the founder of the Middle Kingdom. Not far from there, the buried remains of thousands of terracotta soldiers protect his tomb. The entire site extends over nearly 60 km².

Discover China in a Different Way

The Dragon's Backbone rice terraces are often considered the most beautiful in China. Located between the villages of Pingan and Jinkeng in Guangxi province, they were created in the 13th century during the Yuan dynasty, and the tradition continued until the 17th century, at the beginning of the Qing dynasty. It is possible to hike through the heart of the rice fields, between the tiers and even among the crops. In Chengdu, Sichuan, the giant panda research and breeding center allows for observation of these endangered mammals. Jiuzhaigou National Park, designated a biosphere by UNESCO, is home to diverse ecosystems with over 140 bird species and numerous plant and animal species like the giant panda. Highly visited in summer, it is renowned for its emerald and turquoise-colored lakes as well as its magnificent waterfalls. For thrill-seekers, the Zhangjiajie glass bridge, inaugurated in 2016, is the highest and longest in the world. It can accommodate up to 800 visitors at once. Located in the heart of the Zhangjiajie mountains, this suspension bridge 180 meters high connects two peaks of Hunan's natural park. The bravest can bungee jump or take a zip line from there.

Beijing: city of endless possibilities

Beijing offers countless opportunities for travelers, whether wealthy or not. If you love luxury cars, an evening in front of Sanlitun Village will allow you to witness an endless parade of powerful vehicles, some intriguingly customized. For those who appreciate traditional Chinese culture, a stroll through the hutongs in the city center will let you experience the soul of the capital and its inhabitants. Architecture enthusiasts should not miss a visit, even a brief one, to the Chaoyang business district, between the CCTV tower and The Place mall. History buffs will delight in a journey through time between the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, or the old legation quarter. Indeed, a trip to Beijing encompasses all this and much more.

Shanghai: A City Shaped by History and Politics

Thanks to a relatively well-preserved architectural heritage to this day, the history of Shanghai can be read on the walls of old mansions, in the halls of a 1930s Art Deco hotel, at the heart of a park. The city, in its architecture, has been greatly influenced by the presence of Western and Japanese foreigners. The districts of the former concessions are still clearly defined today. The city of Shanghai has been and remains a true "laboratory of change." The Chinese Communist Party took its first steps there in the early 1920s. The first workers' revolts organized by the communists took place in the city during the 1930s. Shanghai became the stage for the first clashes between nationalists and communists a few years later. Instability in China left the field open to the Japanese, who attacked the city without warning in August 1937. All these historical events have obviously left their mark on Shanghai. One can visit the houses of many political figures, such as Sun Yat-sen, Zhou Enlai, or Song Qingling; discover the site where the first congress of the Communist Party was held; explore museums retracing the history of the concessions, with photos and even period films to support.
