Wonder in the Heart of Wild Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo collects superlatives on different levels, attesting to its exceptional situation and character. This makes it a unique destination in Africa, although still little known. First of all, due to the vastness of its territory, it ranks 11th in the world with 2,345,409 km² (four times the size of France), with only Algeria surpassing it on the African continent. As the most populous country in Central Africa, the DRC is crossed by two time zones. The capital Kinshasa, with eleven million inhabitants, is set to become the first African city by 2020.
The DRC has an impressive hydrographic network covering about 77,810 km², including numerous lakes and rivers. Among them, the Great Lakes hold African and world records. The Congo River, the backbone of the country, is the second largest river in the world after the Amazon in terms of discharge and the fifth longest (4,700 km). The Democratic Republic of the Congo is also a "geological scandal" with precious minerals such as coltan, diamond, gold, copper, and tin. It is home to 47% of Africa's tropical forest massif, the second largest in the world after the Amazon. Five of its eight national parks are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
