Journey to Congo: An Unforgettable Adventure in the Heart of Africa

The "Congo" Myth The Congo Basin has always fascinated and fueled many myths, fantasies, and dreams of exploration from the European continent. This was the case well before its official discovery from the 15th century onwards. As early as the first century, Ptolemy had already approximately located the Mountains of the Moon (Ruwenzori Range) and the Great Lakes on his famous world map. The Pygmies and okapis were also already known to the old world and fed many tales, from the writings of Pliny the Elder and Aristotle, as well as hieroglyphs dating back 2,500 years. This preexisting fascination with this territory led to numerous expeditions, widely followed and publicized at the time. This resulted in the creation of the Independent State of the Congo at the end of the 19th century, a personal property of a monarch who also became mythical: Leopold II. But other legendary figures and historical episodes have fueled fascination with the Congo: the 1871 meeting of explorer Stanley and the missing Dr. Livingstone ("Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"); the relief expedition to Emin Pasha, also led by Stanley. Not to mention the 19th-century Arab slave campaigns which, although very real, nonetheless fueled many fantasies and contributed to building the "Congo myth." All that was needed was a certain Joseph Conrad with his enlightening "Heart of Darkness" (1902), the evocation of missionaries who went to evangelize into the heart of Africa, and other epic colonial tales (construction of the railway, anti-slavery campaigns, capture and exhibition of Pygmies, legends of cannibalism or man-eating lions, etc.) to add to the collective imagination about this truly incredible land.

Wonder in the Heart of Wild Africa

The Democratic Republic of the Congo collects superlatives on different levels, attesting to its exceptional situation and character. This makes it a unique destination in Africa, although still little known. First of all, due to the vastness of its territory, it ranks 11th in the world with 2,345,409 km² (four times the size of France), with only Algeria surpassing it on the African continent. As the most populous country in Central Africa, the DRC is crossed by two time zones. The capital Kinshasa, with eleven million inhabitants, is set to become the first African city by 2020. The DRC has an impressive hydrographic network covering about 77,810 km², including numerous lakes and rivers. Among them, the Great Lakes hold African and world records. The Congo River, the backbone of the country, is the second largest river in the world after the Amazon in terms of discharge and the fifth longest (4,700 km). The Democratic Republic of the Congo is also a "geological scandal" with precious minerals such as coltan, diamond, gold, copper, and tin. It is home to 47% of Africa's tropical forest massif, the second largest in the world after the Amazon. Five of its eight national parks are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Discovery of a Country with a Thousand Facets

The DRC offers diverse and varied worlds, driven by an incredible cultural and natural wealth, making this country a unique place. Endowed with unsuspected and attractive assets, it constitutes a destination with high potential, especially for ecotourism. Its cultural and human heritage is exceptional with over 450 ethnic groups and almost as many languages, practices, customs, and traditions. Many of them deserve to be studied and highlighted artistically, culturally, and anthropologically. Its rich ecosystem features landscapes of exceptional beauty, such as savannas, deep forests, mountains, and mangroves. This diversity is shaped by the varied climate of the Congo. The unique fauna includes many endemic species like the okapi, bonobo, and mountain gorilla. This reservoir of biodiversity is protected in eight national parks and 63 nature reserves, several of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.

A Warm and Authentic Welcome

Beyond the endless list of immense wealth and resources, there is one that is immeasurable and equally, if not more important, which makes this destination unique and so endearing: the warmth of the Congolese people. Congo is indeed known for its tradition of hospitality. Many foreign communities have resided there for a long time, sometimes even for generations. Whether it's European communities stemming from colonization, or other African communities, or even, reflecting today's world, new nationalities like the Chinese. In Congo, passing visitors are always welcome and treated appropriately, according to available means and faithful to the tradition of hospitality, both in the city and in the deep bush. Unlike many other tourist countries, here authenticity is within reach: nothing is easier than forming relationships with locals, having a beer or a goat skewer while chatting about anything and everything, and even finding oneself invited to a family table. It's often an immersive experience for those who know how to be available, respectful, and open to exchange. It leaves a lasting impression, revealing all the magic of this vibrant culture that is decidedly open to others. This certainly goes against the cliché of a dangerous and inhospitable country, not to mention conflict zones often linked to aggressive policies of foreign countries.

Opening to Tourism: A New Era for Visitors

It is observed that the DRC is slowly but surely opening up to tourism. The country is reconnecting with the prosperous colonial and Zairean eras when it attracted many visitors eager to discover its beauties and treasures. Certainly, the path to reconstruction is still long and fraught with obstacles, particularly in terms of security. However, mentalities are changing, numerous infrastructures are emerging, and a "customer" (tourist) oriented mindset is developing, especially in Kinshasa and major cities. Many projects are developing across the country, benefiting from the incredible beauty of its landscapes and natural resources (wildlife, rivers, lakes, forests). Whether through agro-tourism, industrial, river, historical, or cultural tourism, these sectors could promote sustainable ecotourism. National parks already allow for the development of vision tourism (safaris) and adventure tourism (trekking, mountaineering). It is up to the Congolese people to take these initiatives and mobilize the necessary resources so that the DRC can hold an important place on the global stage.
